Leapfrog Client Families First Nominated for Technology Innovation Award
News, April 24, 2006
Families First, a nonprofit organization with over a century of service to families in metropolitan Atlanta, was one of three finalists for a significant award that recognizes nonprofit organizations for innovative use of technology. The 5th annual Technology Innovation Award was presented by Accenture at the Digital Ball hosted by TechBridge on May 6, 2006.
Families First’s journey into the realm of technology innovation began with CEO Pat Showell and Chief Administrative Officer Chris Valley collaborating on strategy and planning to make the agency leaner and technology-enabled. The extent of their task was made clear by a survey in which their staff rated the agency’s computer technology the #1 source of employee frustration. Concluding that information technology was not a core competency, they contracted with Leapfrog Services in 2003 to manage technology and provide support for computer users.
Working with Leapfrog, and with generous support from benefactors, Families First conducted a technology refresh, re-negotiated voice and data contracts, and trained staff to use computer systems more proficiently. In 2005, the CareLogic system from Qualifacts Systems was implemented, and reporting was transformed from a slow, paper-intensive process to a vastly simplified computer task. Communications between case workers and clients were improved. Significant reductions in operational and administrative costs were achieved. The staff reaction was dramatic: a subsequent survey ranked computer technology as the #1 source of employee satisfaction – a worst-to-first turnaround in two years.
See the April 14, 2006 edition of the Atlanta Business Chronicle, section D for comments from Families First and the other award finalists.

The planned agenda for the panel was the problem of Malicious Software ("malware"), its impact on business, and anti-malware strategies and solutions for all budgets. However, much of the discussion ended up being devoted to the threat posed to individuals and businesses by "phishing" and other schemes used to gather private information and ultimately money through email messages and fraudulent websites.
The panel suggested to the audience that identity recognition is the fundamental issue to be addressed. Without improvements in this area, even Internet-savvy consumers and businesses will continue to fall victim to schemes that use phishing and similar means of deception and fraud. The discussion closed with recommendations from the panelists on best practices for businesses to follow and teach to their employees as they seek to avoid falling victim to these sinister ploys.
