Why reuse and recycle electronics?

As technology continues to evolve and products become increasingly affordable, the demand continues to grow. While the market for new technological innovations is mushrooming, so is the need to find a safe way to dispose of old, unwanted e-scrap items. Because many electronic components contain lead and mercury, which can be hazardous to health and the environment, a traditional landfill cannot be used. The reuse and recycling of e-scrap ensures that any negative impact is minimized, while also encouraging energy and resource conservation when recycled materials are used to create new products.

What has the state of Georgia done about e-Scrap recycling?

In 2003, the General Assembly of Georgia passed a legislative mandate creating the Computer Equipment Disposal and Recycling Council (CEDRC). The council has investigated problems and concerns related to the disposal and recycling of computer equipment and presents findings and recommend-ations to the General Assembly on necessary legislative or regulatory actions. The Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources has formed the Pollution Prevention Assistance Division. See www.p2ad.org

How do I determine whether to recycle my used electronics?

Computer equipment that is no longer in use can be refurbished and donated to those who need it if it is still new enough to be viable. Older systems should be processed through a recycler. Leapfrog can assist with either option, and we can help you determine if your equipment is new enough to donate to others. Just complete the recycling request form and we will contact you.

Several nonprofits in the Atlanta metro area accept donations of computer equipment, including Reboot/Touch The Future in Tucker,
Computers For Youth in Lithonia and Keep North Fulton Beautiful.

How do I know that the privacy of my data will be protected?

Leapfrog recognizes not only the value of recycling, but also the importance of data security. Whether your equipment is going to be recycled or reused, it will be thoroughly stripped of any stored data. Non-functional data storage devices will be destroyed.

Electronic equipment often contains hazardous materials, such as:

Leapfrog works in partnership with qualified recyclers to ensure that your used equipment is in responsible hands.

Our recycling partners comply with state and federal guidelines and regulations.  One, Creative Recycling Systems, was recently referenced in National Geographic as an example of the right approach to e-scrap disposal. See www.crserecycling.com.

What if the equipment that I have is still in good working condition?

One option is to donate it to a nonprofit organization. There are several in Atlanta that accept computers - see the third paragraph on this page. If the equipment is dropped off at Leapfrog, a fee of $5.00 per item will be charged (up to a maximum of $20.00 / ten items), and we will refurbish and donate it, if possible.

How can I get started?

If you have computers, monitors, or other equipment ready to be recycled, fill out our recycling request form. Dropoffs of up to ten items are accepted at Leapfrog between 9:00 and 5:00 on weekdays for a fee of $5.00 per item, up to $20.00 maximum. The fee is waived for nonprofits and for our clients. Other options:

1) For larger quantities, Leapfrog can assist in making arrangements for pickup by a recycler. Please fill out the recycling request form.

2) If bringing the equipment is not an option, you can hire a courier service to transport your equipment to Leapfrog. Most couriers will transport smaller items but may require them to be boxed. Consider using Green Express.

3) Dell, HP and other manufacturers have provided for computer equipment to be shipped to them for recycling. See their web sites for details.

If you have questions about recycling your computer electronics, you can request an evaluation of your equipment. Leapfrog will contact you and help you determine how to find a suitable recycling option.   TOP
